Drug abuse by non-athletes

Drug abuse is common among professional athletes, with sportsmen consuming drugs to deal with their injuries, illnesses, managing their stress levels and to perform better. Recently, there has been a substantial rise in the number of people consuming drugs to perform better in their respective fields or for cosmetic purposes, apart from athletes. Usually, bodybuilders, actors, bowlers, high school students, and some other sections of people consume drugs to flaunt toned muscles or to enhance their performance in activities related to their fields.

With so many drugs available in the market, non-athletes, today, experiment with several drugs for their potentials. Here is a compilation of non-athletes who use different drugs for non-athletic purposes:

Bodybuilders

Use of steroids for bodybuilding is common these days. In 1991, there were more than a million people using steroids for body building as per the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse. Today, this number has shot up three times, as reported in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, making it one of the most abused drugs in the United States.

Though used by bodybuilders for cosmetic purposes, it damages the body in the long run. Use of steroids often leads to high cholesterol, heart-stroke, blood clots, hallucinations, aggressive behavior, infertility, and baldness. Besides this, bodybuilders often use insulin to boost their body mass, which could result in hypoglycemia.

Pro-wrestlers

Drug consumption is widely practiced in this industry, often leading to major tragedies. Wrestlers sometimes consume drugs such as painkillers, steroids, sleeping pills and human growth hormones which have a destructive impact on their bodies. In many instances, instead of achieving success, they end up meeting a tragic fate at a young age or get physically crippled.

However, the situation has seen an improvement in the recent years with the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) taking necessary steps to control drug abuse by wrestlers. They have initiated the “Talent Wellness Program” to keep a check on drug consumption, thus successfully controlling the mortality rate among wrestlers.

Actors

The list of actors who have struggled with drug addiction is huge. Actors often abuse drugs to cope with the constant pressure in the industry, or to stay on the top, or to deal with insomnia and depression during movie shoots. Sometimes they even end up succumbing to peer pressure.

Some people believe that actors are prone to addiction due to the nature of their work and the environment in which they live. Added to this, the fact that they have an easy access to drugs makes them even more vulnerable to addiction. Many celebrities who abused alcohol have been helped by the alcohol addiction rehab centers.

Non-athletic high school goers

For some students dealing with high school entails facing anxiety, fear as well as temptation. Some young adults resort to consuming alcohol or abusing drugs to deal with the changes. This often leads to major health disruptions, arrests, assaults, and even death.

Adderall is one of the freely available drugs which students use, without prescription, to stay awake through the night and study hard for the exams. They also abuse drugs to socialize better, deal with the stress of performance, and stay relaxed.
