Marijuana is one of the most abused illicit drug in the United States. According to a recent State of Legal Marijuana Markets report released by the Arcview Group, California tops the chart for marijuana sales among the states that have legalized marijuana. The state accounts for more than one-fourth of all legal marijuana sales in the 50 U.S. states and Canada combined. Arcview Group is a marijuana market research and investment firm.
According to the estimates released by the research firm, approximately $1.8 billion worth of legal marijuana was bought in California in 2016. The numbers outpaced the consumption of marijuana in Colorado and Washington D.C. that permits the drug consumption for both medical and recreational purposes by anybody above the age of 21. This record sale was reported despite the additional bureaucratic burden of requiring a medical card and a doctor’s recommendation to obtain marijuana in California.
For years, the use and abuse of illicit drugs have been a major concern in the U.S. An alarmingly increasing number of youngsters and adults are falling into the trap of illicit drug use. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) survey, approximately 27.1 million people aged 12 or older were current illicit drug users in 2015.
Marijuana is classified as a Schedule I drug and is widely used for both recreational and medicinal purposes, which accounts for its high sales.
According to the report, California accounted for 27 percent of the legally sold marijuana in the U.S. Colorado accounted for approximately 20 percent and Washington State recorded 11 percent of the total marijuana sales in 2016. Factors such as a high population and cultural differences are being thought to have resulted in the increased sales. These numbers are expected to go up once the state law permits its use for recreational purposes.
The report also points out that the legal cannabis industry is presently a $6.7 billion annual industry in North America, which is up by 34 percent from the previous year’s estimate of over $5 billion.
Abusing marijuana can make one experience symptoms, such as euphoria, drowsiness, altered sense of time, impaired memory, dry mouth and increased heart rate. It can also lead to an addiction in an individual, which could be life-threating, harm one’s health and can also impact one’s personal as well as professional life.
For family and loved ones, it is hard to deal with an individual’s compulsive drug-seeking behavior. Therefore, it is imperative to get professional help from a mental health expert who can advise the right therapies and treatment plans.
Detoxifying one’s body from the drug of abuse followed by counseling and behavioral treatments, such as motivational enhancement therapy (MET), cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and contingency management (CM) can enable a speedy recovery. Along with this, it is also important for the authorities to implement some stringent rule to curb the drug’s easy availability, curbing its risk of abuse.
