Ways to prevent drunk driving by employers

Driving after drinking is never advisable. But drunk driving is a serious problem in the United States in spite of legal checks and awareness campaigns about its ill effects. Alcohol is a depressant, like other addictive drugs, which slows down normal functioning of the central nervous system, including the brain.

One is advised against drunk driving considering the vision impairment which drivers suffer from after drinking. Alcohol also reduces concentration power and reaction time. These conditions may lead to accidents as drivers tend to sleep while driving, posing risks to himself and others on the road. Most people find it difficult to make a choice about what to drink and how much to drink at parties or a get-together. Having to say “no” to colleagues or friends offering alcohol may sound rude, but one needs to be strict because of the unwanted consequences of drunk driving.

The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) highlights that alcohol use among employees can be extremely detrimental to any business that can lead to loss of production, absenteeism, fatalities, legal liabilities, workers’ compensation costs etc. Drinking before or after working hours, for example, in company parties, can lead to impaired driving, causing serious injuries or death to the employee or to others.

The employers can help protect the organization’s name against any untoward slandering. While promoting safety while driving, employers can ensure:

  • Alcohol-free get-together occasions: Employers need to host alcohol-free events to minimize the risks associated with drunk driving. Even if alcohol is served, employers need to take care of employees who tend to drive home themselves after the party as this may cause road accidents. This would also blemish the reputation of the company and raise questions about its corporate culture. It is the obligation of the employers to keep their employees safe through regular and strict supervision and necessary control.
  • Holding parties at licensed restaurants: Licensed restaurants tend to cut off the supply of alcohol once they realize that their guests have had enough. This also helps employers pass on the responsibility of limited drinking to restaurants who abstain from serving alcohol once the employees or guests have reached their limits. Though the onus cannot be passed on entirely on restaurants, employers need to look out for employees who are visibly intoxicated or if they are not in a position to drive home safely.
  • Cut off open access to alcohol: Alcohol, when served at licensed establishments tend to be consumed less quickly as waiters are trained to stop serving to those who seem visibly drunk. Apart the waiters can be trained to flag those employees or guests who have consumed too much of alcohol and are in need of help.
  • Stressing on day-time parties: Lunch parties or breakfast parties involve less amount of drinking which reduces the chance of drinking beyond a limit. Though day parties are rare, organizations are now exploring this option due to an increase in the number of drunk driving cases or of people apprehended for driving under the influence (DUI).
  • Alternative driving home options: Employees are unable to drive home after drinking excessively. In such cases, it becomes imperative for employers to arrange for transportation means to take their employees back home. Some organizations also book rooms in hotels for employees who tend to go overboard while drinking.

Apart from the different means which organizations take to protect their employees against drunk driving or any untoward accidents because of excessive drinking, some also resort to inviting families or spouses.
