Tiger Woods arrested for DUI, denies alcohol involvement

One of the most spectacular sports personalities in the world, golfer Tiger Woods had his share of vicissitudes in life, mired in controversies and an extramarital affair that completely crumbled his family life. On May 28, 2017, Woods was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) near his home in Jupiter, Florida. A picture of unshaven Woods – sullen eyes, a drooping pose and a white t-shirt – emerging from Palm Beach County Jail in Florida is going viral on the internet. People are shocked to read about their favorite golfer being pulled up for drunken driving.

However, in a statement issued Monday night, Woods denied that alcohol played any role in his arrest. He cleared the air, saying it was an “unexpected reaction” to prescription medication. “I understand the severity of what I did and I take full responsibility for my actions,” Woods said. However, the reaction of his medicines caught him off-guard that actually led to the incident.

“I want the public to know that alcohol was not involved. What happened was an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications. I didn’t realize the mix of medications had affected me so strongly,” he added. He deeply regretted his action that night and apologized for letting his family and fans down. He was cooperative during the investigation and hailed the representatives of the Jupiter Police Department and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office for demonstrating professionalism in handling the case.

Woods had a back surgery in April

The winner of 14 major golf championships had undergone a surgery for his back problem in April and he was on prescription medicines for managing his back pain. The arrest report charged Woods with DUI – unlawful blood alcohol/DUI alcohol or drugs. However, no specific causes have come out – whether it was alcohol or drugs that led to the incident and the arrest of Woods.

A report in ABC News quoted a witness who told the trooper that Woods was drinking alcohol earlier and that Woods had been prescribed two drugs – sleep aid Ambien and painkiller Vicodin. The identity of the witness has not been revealed but it was the same person who pulled out Woods from the car after the incident. Woods’ wife had to smash the back window of the Cadillac Escalade with a golf club to help him. The police charged him with careless driving and fined $164.

Alcohol and prescription pills make a deadly concoction

Many people use a combination of alcohol and prescription pills to experience intense highs. Such a concoction could be fatal for the user as the chance of overdose shoots up immensely. In such a situation, the user would not be in a position to control or manage the ‘high’ leaving him or her in a state of peril. Even first-time responders find it hard to provide assistance because the state of intoxication is unpredictable when various substances are combined. Hence, one should always refrain from combining alcohol and prescription medicines as the level of danger mounts inordinately.
