Celebrities and addiction – 4: 5 renowned personalities addicted to alcohol

Often alcohol consumption due to increased media frenzy and pressure to perform unintentionally becomes an essential part of the lives of the celebrities. Despite being aware of the health hazards of alcohol addiction, a person dependent on the substance starts feeling incomplete without it. Such a condition caused due to a high level of alcohol consumption regularly is known as alcohol use disorder (AUD).

1. Robin Williams

Though hard to imagine Robin Williams, an American actor adored for his impeccable comic timing and incomparable acting, suffered from alcohol addiction. The actor started developing an addiction to alcohol and cocaine during the early stages of his life. He decided to begin a new page by turning to sobriety after the sudden death of his friend, American actor John Belushi, due to alcohol.

2. Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck, an American actor and filmmaker who has acted in award-winning movies such as, “Armageddon,” “Pearl Harbor,” etc., checked into a rehab in 2001 for his severe addiction to alcohol. Though he managed to stay sober for a decade he suffered a relapse. Despite all odds, the actor has never allowed his addiction to become a barrier in his path to success.

3. Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan, an American actress who won millions of hearts as a child actor, has been to rehab multiple times due to her severe alcohol addiction. Lindsay had been a responsible child, however, she has publically shared that the first time she drank alcohol was when she was punished by her mother and made to sleep next to her vomit. She has admitted to being aware that her alcohol addiction is a disease that will take its own time to cure.

4. Diana Ross

Diana Ross, an American singer who went on to establish milestones in both acting and singing, turned to alcohol in 1999 following the end of her 14-year marriage. Due to the severity of her alcohol addiction, she was sent to a rehab center in 2002. Understanding her responsibility towards family and fans, the singer chose to undergo a 12-step recovery program. Since then, the singer has successfully remained sober.

5. Steven Tyler 

Steven Tyler, who is best known as the lead singer of the rock band Aerosmith, has witnessed his share of ups and downs in his struggle against alcohol addiction. Famously nicknamed as “Demon of Screamin” for his astonishing vocal range, the singer has admitted to abusing alcohol and drugs to cope with the pressure that came with success. His addiction not only adversely impacted his career but also led to the downfall of the band. As such, he has been to a rehab center twice, with an intermittent 20-year phase of sobriety. Since his last visit to a rehab center in 2009, he has stayed sober.
