The untimely death of “True Blood” actor Nelsan Ellis recently was a big shocker to the world. His relatives and fans are yet to come to terms with the loss. The family of Ellis decided to disclose the circumstances of his death – his long struggle with alcoholism and drug abuse – keeping in mind the fact that millions across the world face the same set of issues that plagued Ellis.
Ellis, who died of heart failure on July 8, dealt with a perennial skirmish with alcoholism and drug addiction, which eventually caused his death. His family decided to share the exact circumstances around the actor’s passing with the sole motive of helping others struggling with the same addiction as Ellis did. “Nelsan’s father has bravely agreed for me to share the circumstances of Nelsan’s heart failure. Nelsan has suffered with drug and alcohol abuse for years. After many stints in rehab, Nelsan attempted to withdraw from alcohol on his own. According to his father, during his withdrawal from alcohol he had a blood infection, his kidneys shut down, his liver was swollen, his blood pressure plummeted, and his dear sweet heart raced out of control,” read the family statement, released through his manager Emily Gerson Saines.
The statement lauded Ellis in his multiple roles and relationships and admitted that he has left an irreparable void in their lives. Even fans are left devastated at this sudden death of Ellis. The statement that came from the family also said that Ellis regretted his addiction and was ashamed of it.
Born in Harvey, Illinois, Ellis attended Thorn Ridge High School in Dolton and went on to join Oxford University and Columbia College in Chicago before graduating from the famed Juilliard School. His illustrious career spanned across numerous film and TV shows, including “The Soloist,” “The Butler,” “Get on Up” and “Elementary.”
Ellis’s death is a huge loss for HBO with which he had a longstanding relationship. HBO released a statement saying, “We were extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Nelsan Ellis. Nelsan was a longtime member of the HBO family whose groundbreaking portrayal of Lafayette will be remembered fondly within the overall legacy of True Blood.” Nelsan will be dearly missed by his fans and all of us at HBO.”
Addiction is a scourge which kills millions across the globe, including the United States. It does not discriminate and devours anyone flirting with it. Many celebrities have died due to alcohol addiction-related causes. People need to understand that casual drinking sessions can eventually turn into an addiction. According to the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 86.4 percent people aged 18 or older reportedly drank alcohol at some point in their lifetime.
Addiction may be fatal when severe and chronic but it is not the end of the road for people who seek timely treatment. A timely intervention can save lives of those who overdose and gradually wean others from addiction.
