Liam Payne of One Direction opens up about his alcohol addiction and mental health

In 2010, five young teenagers, called One Direction, from the streets of England and Ireland, with dreams in their eyes, participated in X Factor. Even though they finished third in the competition, the kind of success and fame that followed them was something they had never imagined in their wildest dreams and began topping charts all over the world.

But handling such fame and success is not everyone’s cup of tea. One of the founding members, Liam Payne, was just 14 years old when One Direction rose to stardom. Unable to handle the stress, he turned to alcohol for support. Eventually, he would drink before going on stage to manage the pressure.

Hard days

Speaking about the days that followed their international stardom, Payne said that performing the “same 22 songs, every single day” in hundreds of concerts around the world became toxic. “Even if you’re not happy, you’ve got to go out there,” he said.

It was like putting on a cartoon costume every time he went on stage to perform, but little did anyone know about the pain and the struggle with his happiness that was hidden. He said that most of the time he was frustrated and irritated but he had no choice. Though Payne is thankful for the wonderful time they had performing and touring, he felt that the success brought its own share of stressors.

The hiatus

According to Men’s Health, One Direction had achieved milestones that even the legendary band The Beatles could not achieve. Apart from many other achievements, the band’s first four albums debuted at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The band initially comprised Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson, and in 2015, Malik announced his departure to continue his career as a solo artist. After a performance on the X Factor finale in 2015, the group went on a hiatus.

Blessing in disguise

Payne thanked this break and said that it was in fact a blessing in disguise. “We never got the chance to stop, reflect, and enjoy the fame,” Payne said. The break gave him time to think about the fame and success around the band and how it affected his mental health. It also gave him the chance to work on his own music and spend time with his beloved two-year-old son, Bear.

Laughing at his own success, Payne said that those days were like “a perfect storm,” like the scene from a film script waiting to fall in line. He said that those times could never be recreated, nor would it ever be seen in the history of mankind.

Treatment for alcohol addiction

Unfortunately, a lot of teens, like Payne, look at alcohol as a way to help them deal with the problems of life. As alcohol helps them relax and not overly worry about their problems, the person feels better about themself and their capability of handling the problems. When alcohol leaves their systems, the crave the feeling of “everything is ok” and gravitate back to alcohol. This craving and continuous indulgence leads to dependence, which ultimately becomes an addiction.

Alcohol addiction can affect any person, regardless of their gender, age, social standing, or celebrity status. However, one must realize that alcohol addiction can be successfully treated with the help of evidence-based alcohol addiction treatment programs.
